Update On Sock Trend

In my last post I talked about a sock trend that I had heard about, and I think I saw some signs of it on the SFSU campus.  As I was talking to a friend in one of my classes I noticed that her socks were peeking over the top of her boot.  I thought maybe she had just pulled them up to high on accident, but then in my Women and Words class I saw two girls sporting the same trend!  I have to say that I am loving it.  Another friend of mine in class had metallic with a little sparkle socks sticking out over the top of her boots, and it looked great.  It was just the right amount of pizzazz and casual, I will definitely be on the hunt this weekend for tall socks to wear with my boots! Have you seen this trend, and if so do you like it?

Sock Trend?

This past rainy weekend I was working, as you probably could guess.  As I was helping a customer purchase a pair of rain boots, she asked if we sold socks.  I informed her that we did not have any, and apologized.  She began to ask me if I knew of the new sock trend, and I told her I had not heard of it.  She informed me that her son is in middle school, and that while she was chaperoning his dance she noticed that all the middle school girls were wearing shorts with unique socks.  She went on to say that the socks were mismatched and of different heights.  I told her that I had never heard of this trend, and did not notice it on our local middle schoolers who occasionally come in to shop.  She told me that she lived in Marin, not too far from Los Gatos where I live, so the sock trend should of hit already.  It would be more plausible if she was from the East coast or the Midwest, as trends travel from East to West, but she lived close.  I am curious does anyone know of this new trend?  Maybe, I am too old to be in the know, so please send me pictures or any information if you have heard of this sock trend.

Say Yes To The Dress

Before work this morning I came across a show called Say Yes To The Dress, the show features a bridal store, and the women that come in to find a dress for their wedding.  While watching this show something strange happened to me, all of a sudden I felt a need to try on wedding dresses.  I have no intention of getting married any time soon, nor do I have a desire to, but I really want to try some wedding dresses on!  I am not sure where this want is truly coming from, and I am sure a psychologist would find some deep rooted problem within me, but after watching this show I have an urge.

This also reminded me of the Friends episode where Phoebe and Monica wear wedding dresses just for fun, so I started to think that maybe I am not too crazy.  All I know is that I totally want to join in on Phoebe and Monica's fun! But what do you think ladies, do you ever have the urge to put on a wedding dress even though you are not getting married? Am I crazy?

It's Raining, It's Pouring

The weather outside may be drab, but the styles that we put together don't have to be.  On the SFSU campus the wind is blowing, the rain and hail is coming down like a midwestern winter, but the fashion of the students has not been deterred. Rain boots can be seen everywhere, and not just in yellow or black, the generic gardening kind, but many different colors and styles.  From polka dots to exotic prints these stand out boots are making a fashion impact.

Bright coats are another trend that can be seen this winter. Wearing dark dull colors on a dreary day is so boring, and brings down your mood. Sporting a bright coat can brighten not just your mood, but also the people around you.  If you do not have a bright coat, you can substitute in bright accessories, which can also make an outfit more exciting!  A scarf, bag, hat, or jewelry can change any winter style from drab to fab!  Forever 21 has great inexpensive coats and accessories that you can piece with any outfit to make it fresh.

The last winter trend that I will discuss is ponchos.  For years I had a poncho sitting in my closet.  I purchased it when they were last in, winter 2004-2005, and I think I finally got rid of it in 2008.  Now I am kicking myself, because as all trends do, ponchos are coming back.  However, this time we are seeing them in a slightly different style.  The poncho jacket is all the rage, it is a heavy coat, that instead of having arm or just draping over the body like the typical poncho, it has slits to put arms through.  Leighton Meeseter's coat is a bright fun color, that is also a poncho.  She also pieces bright colors as I mentioned, which makes her outfit my favorite of the week!

So what do you think? Should rain boots be left in the garden? Is a bright coat or accessories too much? Ponchos cute fashionable or just ugly?

The Groovy 70's Make a Swinging Comeback

Me in my mom's vintage 70's coat!
No one could be more excited than my mom that 1970's fashion is coming back into style.  I can not lie, and say that I am disappointed either, because of her I have a window into that decade.  The only down side to seventies fashion is making it into a 2011 style, and not a Halloween costume.  My intention is to show you how to wear 70's fashion today.  The Picture in the top center is of actress Katie Holmes.  As you can see she is wearing jeans that have a big flair on the bottom, a.k.a. bell bottoms.  This is the easiest way to pull off the trend, a lot of stores still make flare jeans or pants, I bet you even have a pair from the last time this trend was in, so dig through your closet or head to the GAP.  Wear the jeans with present styles to update the look.  In the picture to the right the model is in full 70's style, but in 2011.  The pants with the high waist and bell bottom, the white peasant top, and her hat are all fashions of the 1970's.  However, she looks polished, not like she just stepped out of a time machine.  Another seventies trend to watch out for is clogs, they are also very popular at the moment.  My best suggestion is to look at old photos of people in the seventies, and find one thing that you like, then go with that trend. Let me know what you discover, and what your favorite 70's trend is right now.

Grammy Fashion

The Grammy's were yesterday night, and the music is not the only thing people are gossiping about today.  The red carpet was filled with amazing fashion, and some that you wish never happened.  Some of the people that I thought looked great were Selma Blair, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Hudson, and Julianne Hough.  However, I have to say that my top two favorites of the night were Rihanna and Selena Gomez.  Rihanna's dress was revealing and shocking, but not in a way that Grandma would be offended.  It still left something to the imagination which is why I think the dress really worked.  The dress was age appropriate and the epitome of Grammy style, exactly what my other topic pick exudes.  Selena's dress was beautiful, and was tailored to her perfectly.  It had just enough plunge on the neckline, and was a fun metallic material that really made the dress a home run.  Unfortunately, with great fashion also comes terrible fashion.  For some reason the men at the Grammy's were having some fashion blunders, some of my least favorite styles of the night are Usher, D.J. David Guetta, Justin Bieber, and Ricky Martin.  My overall least favorite styles of the night were worn by Hayley Williams and Lady Gaga.  Hayley Williams dress was awful, I do not even know where to start?  The see through part on her stomach, the random pink fluff of feathers, or the black tights. Her outfit is a mess, and it hurts just looking at it.  My other fashion blunder is Lady Gaga.  We get it Gaga you are unique!! Honestly, though riding in an egg???  It is not fashionable or stylish, just strange, I expected something really exciting from her, and the egg was a let down.  Here are some of the styles of the night, what do you think?

Men's Style

Men's fashion has never really crossed my mind.  I look at men, guys, boys as having more of a style.  However, recently it was brought up that I should do a post on men's fashion.  The one and only place I could think of to go was GQ magazine, the two times that I bought the magazine, because Tom Brady was on the cover, I noticed that they had some fashion tips.  Once on the website I clicked onto the style header, I guess my thinking was right no fashion for guys, just style.  From there I clicked on a piece titled, The Wandering Eye: Turning Japanese, Part 1, by Gordon von Steiner. The one line on the page reads "Gordon von Steiner lands in Tokyo- home of some of the most seriously dandified, ahead of the curve dudes on the plant."  I scrolled down to look at the men who are supposed to have this amazing style, to find that some of the clothes themselves are not bad once you get past the look of the person wearing it.  But then some of the looks are just a little too out there and crazy! I mean no one wants to see a guys colored socks hanging out of his shoes Don't even get me started on socks and sandals!  I can definitely say  the men of Tokyo opened my eyes to new style, but honestly I prefer basic men's style.  What about you guys out there how do you like to dress and ladies how do you like to see your men dress?

Social Shopper

As I stand at work waiting for customers to come in and shop, I am contemplating what I should share with you all.  Maybe I should write about the spring runways, or the new in shoe? I check what is new in the fashion world on the New York times website, visit Glamour magazine's page, and then Lucky magazine's.  Each spot leaves me uninspired, because everything I find is old news, but then I remember to check the Vogue website.  As I navigate my way through the webpage, I notice a new feature, The Social Shopper.  I click on the words, curious about what The Social Shopper could be.  The page loads, and in front of me is a picture of actress Hallie Steinfeld from True Grit, she is wearing a colorful dress, and next to her picture is a sketch of a woman wearing a similar striped number.  As I scroll down I come across some writing that talks about how Vogue does not just acquire their fashion information from the typical places, but from fashion bloggers such as myself!  I find it somewhat thrilling to know that Vogue listens to what everyday people have to say about fashion.  Also, as I continue to scroll down further I find ten items that Vogue suggests on how to wear stripes in everyday styles.  The whole point of The Social Shopper is to help women translate fashion that they see on the runway, television, or other places into ways that they can wear them without seeming too far out there.  I love this idea, because so many times I will see something, but think I could never get away with that (see photo).  However, Vogue has saved one of my many fashion problems, and hopefully one of yours too!

Style for All

At a young age I began to take notice of what was in style, even if I was forced to wear my sisters hammy downs. As a college student on the San Francisco State campus I am introduced to many forms of fashion. On Whitnee's Fashion Corner blog I am going to attempt to break down fashion, and help you better understand that fashion is not limited to the big city.
Each season "someone" claims what the new "in" item or items are, for example I just heard that light denim is now in for the spring season, I find light denim gross, but that is just me. Vogue magazine has posted on their website the top ten best dressed for the week, and it got me thinking who picks these top ten style winners?  Obviously, the people at Vogue make the final decision of the top ten, but who says that they know what style is?  On the list, no where is there a reason as to why the ladies or gentlemen made it to the top ten.  So style is a personal opinion, some people may love light denim tops, as said above I think they are hideous, so hopefully this blog will help give you an insight to fashion, and into my personal fashion opinion.  Please comment and let me know what you think, I am open to change!
